End-to-end monitoring assures drug safety: LTS progresses in drug serialization

“Serialization, Unique Product Identification (UPI), Aggregation and Track ‘n Trace” are keywords describing various means and measures to prevent counterfeiting of pharmaceuticals. About 10 % of all pharmaceuticals worldwide are suspected to be counterfeited. This may have led to the death of possibly up to 70.000 patients using tuberculosis- and malaria remedies alone, the safety of pharmaceuticals patients had fatally relied upon. The awareness and urgency regarding the counterfeiting problem increases further in the public and the health authorities.

In close cooperation with its business partners, LTS has set out to support the responsible authorities in their strife against counterfeiting pharmaceuticals. Already in 2015 LTS established in its Andernach/Germany operations a pilot plant for serialization, extending capabilities to product aggregation effective in 2016. In the first quarter of 2016 LTS established identical capabilities also in its West Caldwell/NJ operations in the USA, operational well before the obligation of the US authorities per fall 2017.

‘Serialization’ defines the marking of individual sales units with a serial number which is lodged in a database and thus can be verified at any time. When a distinct code is added on the outer packaging as well, it is called ‘Aggregation‘. These measures enable the tracking of the individual sales unit over the entire supply chain from LTS to the consumer.

In realizing this process, LTS acts globally, patient- and future-oriented. The current implementation of both Serialization and Aggregation at LTS – West Caldwell and Andernach- offers a most flexible system to our customers, may it be for the American, European, Chinese or Korean markets.

LTS furthermore supports the global battle against counterfeiting of pharmaceuticals for more safety by supporting the regular knowhow exchange on the topic of serialization with its customers, suppliers in the pharmaceutical industry. LTS commits to its responsibility in leading the end-to-end monitoring to assure drug safety.
